Edmonton Trade Mission Opens Door for Local High Tech Firms

The Clay County Economic Development Council and the Missouri Department of Economic Development are planning a trade mission to Edmonton, a major technological center for Canada and a world-leader in development of nanotechnology.

The trip Aug. 17-21 is designed to create focused, business-to-business meetings between Missouri and Edmonton firms. The primary emphasis is on opportunities in nanotechnology.

Home to 10 post-secondary institutions and active in development of research, medicine and nanotechnology, Edmonton researchers are leading in development in several life science fields and medical devices. The National Institute for Nanotechnology in Edmonton is a worldwide leader in its field.

Nanotechnology applies the science of controlling tiny pieces of matter —atoms and molecules—to produce revolutionary products and processes. Recognizing that worldwide markets for nano-goods and services could reach $1.5 trillion annually by 2015, Canada is positioning itself as a nanotechnology leader. The National Research Council of Canada is working to establish partnerships with new businesses for mutual economic benefit. The council, which established the Institute in Edmonton, has also promoted Edmonton’s “small-tech” cluster, a research and development hub working with area businesses.

The goal of the trade mission is to foster an exchange of ideas that can lead to Missouri startup companies, Stage 1 companies, Stage 2 companies and technology adoption in any of several fields. Organizers are placing an emphasis on quality communication rather than a large group tour.

“One way Clay County companies can stay ahead of the competition is by adopting the latest in technology,” explained EDC Executive Director Jim Hampton. “This is an opportunity to see world class technology first hand. It’s a significant chance to develop business contacts in one of the most dynamic markets in the world.”

The cost of the trip, including round trip flight, will be approximately $1,500. For additional information, contact the EDC at (816) 468-8989. Participants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
